This is not, however, a mere reproduction of reality: these illustrations tend to abstract and extract: an abstraction of shapes and colours from which the regenerating power of nature itself can be distilled. Characterising these works are the soft strokes that give rise to naïve art in the noblest sense of the term. In their aesthetic purity, some of the illustrations in the Flora series convey a feeling of stillness, while others infuse energy and vitality, in a crescendo that ranges from the softest to the most saturated hues.
